It's one thing for an individual to make their mark on grassroots short track racing as a driver, and it's a another thing for that same individual to risk it all outside of the seat. For Bill Russell, that's not been a worry of his. He has a mission, and that mission is to Make Racing Great Again.
Longtime race fans fondly recall the Wild Bill Russell days on the track as a driver, and he was as fierce of a competitor as they came. Whether it was multiple nights at the track in the same week or work days on the car, people knew what to expect when Bill Russell parked in the pit area. Not only did business pick up, his competitors were going to have to earn everything that night.
With nothing more to prove on the track, Bill's love and passion for racing led him down a pathway many might avoid: owning a track. The struggle across the nation with grassroots racing is real, and more people are getting out of the business rather than in. Although the Russell Family was on the edge of Mottville Speedway ownership, a pathway offers several forks in the road, and Southwest Michigan racing history changed with one simple announcement in July 2023: The Russell's have arrived to M-40.
With their arrival, Russell was one of the main people to interact and connect with race fans as he walked throughout the grandstand area. Russell often greets fans, has conversations with them, and will take the time to enjoy the races with people who've made the choice to walk through their gates. That connection has proved important as their fan base builds each season.
A racer remembers being a racer, and that's something important to Russell. He goes through the pit area to thank drivers for their time, interacts with crews, and might even be found in the tire barn still working on things as the Russell's are all hands on deck. That in itself is a lesson--he won't ask anyone to do anything he wouldn't do. As a racer, he went hard and fast, and as an owner, he's all-in. That's how one helps to Make Racing Great Again.
