The first time Lane Head jumped into a "real" race car, he took second in the Super Stock B-Feature. But, when you're a member of the Head Dynasty and have grown up around the sport with a bloodline of racing success, it was not surprising to many that Lane found success almost immediately.
Head's first race came in 2016, and three years later in 2019 at Galesburg, Head won his first ever feature. Legend Rick Beebe famously said, "first of many to come," and when a legend makes a prediction, it often comes true.
In 2022 at the Springport Michigan Cup, Lane's father, Buddy, swapped spots as Lane took over the 46 Late Model hot rod and finished his weekend in Victory Lane. Then, on September 14, 2024 at Owosso, Head was victorious in the Late Model Feature on the same night his father claimed the track championship. They say two Heads are better than one, and throughout his racing career, he's had guidance from some of the best to ever do it in short track racing.
That's what made a 2023 debut special to Head. As a kid, he dreamt about competing at the highest levels, and after many nights in the garage, Head jumped behind the wheel of an Outlaw Super Late Model. With support from people like Dale and Alex at Canterbury Construction, Head has grown as a competitor to take on the best around.
So, how does someone keep going? For Head, the end of his 2025 season was a bit different after they purchased a 600cc Non-Wing car for the Rumble in Fort Wayne. Head had never been behind the wheel of one before. Similar to his debut in 2016, Head jumped right in to compete against the best racers from around the nation in their annual trip to Fort Wayne.
Night 1 did not go quite as planned, but the team worked for hours to get everything ready for the Saturday show where Head finished 11th out of 18 drivers--not a bad weekend for a debut.
From a family full of racing success, Head continues to grow into his own. With every outing and every lap, Lane has shown that he's ready to carry on the legacy for years to come.
