"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
The 2025 season offered many headlines before the first flag waved for competition. One of the key headlines in Southwest Michigan was the sudden departure of Donnie Ritter from Springport. At Springport, over the course of eight years, Ritter and crew built a race program that could compete with anyone around despite the many challenges they faced---location being one of them.
Under Ritter's leadership, Michigan Cup became the crown jewel of post-season racing as the 2023 and 2024 season ending event outdrew every show in The State of Michigan, and drivers from around the region made it their yearly destination with a strong field of cars across the board.
For many, that's what made the announcement so stunning, but Ritter wasn't on the sidelines for long. After heavy recruitment from many interested parties, Kalamazoo secured Donnie's leadership to manage the pit area on race days. More headlines broke in May, and Ritter was now the man in charge of it all.
One of his favorite sayings in 2025 was, "I inherited the book," and he certainly made every chapter worth the read and gave Kalamazoo a worthy story in its 75th season. After all, one of the things that allows Ritter to stand out to many is that he's never forgotten where he came from--he's a racer, and he was a championship racer at that in the West Michigan Outlaw Late Models. Competing to be the best isn't a new thing for Ritter, and it's a challenge he's willing to take on with grace, understanding, and integrity.
Drivers and staff bought in with Ritter's arrival, and a solid car count gave fans must see racing every week in every class. In fact, Super Shoe, one of Kalamazoo's classic events, had its best car count in nearly ten years with full fields in every feature.
In a journey that first started at Galesburg with his first step into promoting, Ritter has carried every lesson from his past as he's grown to be one of the best and highly respected promoters around the region.
