"Home-run hitters drive Cadillacs," said Baseball Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner from the Pittsburgh Pirates, and on and off the track, Kenny Head is a home-run hit.
Over the course of a 40 year career, Kenny Head was the standard many reached for, and while the wins didn't come every single week, his passion and purpose stood tall. For Head, it was adrenaline in his veins as there was nothing to him that compared to 100 MPH speeds behind the wheel.
Head's multiple championships came in the fierce Late Model division and Factory Stocks with his most famous car perhaps being his Cadillac in the late 90s and early 2000s. But like many successful drivers, adversity somehow always finds a way to appear, and the loss of his father, and later his step-son Ben Raber, was difficult. But when Head took the track, his happy place as his wife would call it, he always knew he had two people behind him pushing him forward. That didn't eliminate the pain, but Head raced for more than himself. Each year, Kalamazoo honors the legacy of Ben Raber and the foot print he left with the annual running of the Raber's Rumble.
The 2025 season was a year of change at Kalamazoo, and two long-time racers in Billy Shannon and Head made clear that this year would be their last as full-time racers. But for Head, he isn't quite ready to fully walk away from racing in its entirety. For the second season, Kenny Head has been leader of the Kalamazoo Mini Wedge program which mentors and coaches the next generation of racers.
As a part of the Mini Wedge program, Head has established a foundation that he and his team use to help the next generation learn. The team designed a technical track at Kalamazoo with tight, quick, sharp turns. Head has also used his lengthy career which came with many lessons as coaching points for the next generation which includes strong sportsmanship and an ability to overcome adversity.
At a time Head could have raced into the sunset, he still has plenty to give to the sport. It's in his blood.
